The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument is more than just a local attraction; it is a designated U.S. national monument and is a "dark sky sanctuary". Located in northern Maine's Mount Katahdin Region within Penobscot County, the monument spans an impressive 87,563 acres (137 sq mi; 35,435 ha) of mountains and forestland, and a portion of the East Branch Penobscot River. The Katahdin Woods & Waters National Scenic Byway is 89 miles long.
This scenic route runs from the southern entrance of Baxter State Park through Millinocket, past the Katahdin Inn and Suites, along Route 11 and the Penobscot River, to Patten, and ends at Baxter’s northern entrance at Grand Lake Matagamon
The byway winds through some of Maine’s most dramatic landscapes, offering views of Mount Katahdin (5,268 feet), the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, and features rivers, forests, lakes, and wildlife-rich areas.
If you plan to drive it, allow 4 or 5 hours for the byway itself, but a full day or more is recommended to explore trailheads, fishing spots, and visitor centers along the way
